If you have ever explored the EU Blue Card requirements in Hungary, you know the process can feel more demanding than expected. Even so, here is a clear overview of what the 2026 Blue Card rules actually mean.
The EU Blue Card is Hungary’s premium residence permit for highly skilled third‑country nationals, granted only to applicants with verified higher education or substantial high‑level professional experience. Applicants must hold a local employment contract of at least six months for a role that legitimately requires advanced qualifications.
They must also present a valid passport, proof of health insurance, and documentation confirming their professional expertise.
A central element of the assessment is the salary threshold, which rises significantly in 2026. For most high‑skilled positions, the minimum monthly gross salary is 1,001,048 HUF (approx. €2,565). For shortage occupations—primarily various healthcare professions—the reduced threshold is 800,838 HUF (approx. €2,050) per month.
These amounts are not merely indicative: the salary must remain above the threshold for the entire validity period of the Blue Card.
Importantly, the new 2026 salary requirements also apply to all EU Blue Card issuance and renewal cases that were initiated in 2025 but are only decided or approved in 2026.
This creates a strict and often inflexible compliance environment for both employers and applicants. Given the increasingly demanding financial and administrative criteria, many professionals find alternative residence routes more realistic.
Therefore, considering the continued strictness of the EU Blue Card framework, a Hungarian Card residence permit or an Intra‑Corporate Transfer (ICT) visa often appears to be a more practical solution in 2026.
