Business Travel to Hungary: What You Need to Know (Without Legal Complications)

So you are planning to travel to Budapest for a business meeting, perhaps to finalize an agreement, explore a potential partnership, or simply enjoy a cup of espresso while discussing strategy. If you are a third-country national (meaning you are not from the European Union or European Economic Area), this is your straightforward guide to ensuring your visit is both legal and smooth.

What Qualifies as a “Business Purpose”?

To keep things clear: a business purpose means you are coming to Hungary to engage in professional activities. These include:
  • Attending meetings or negotiations
  • Exploring investment opportunities
  • Establishing or managing a company
  • Participating in trade fairs or conferences
It does not include taking up employment or earning income locally! That falls under a different visa category.
Do You Require a Visa?
🇨🇳 Citizens of China
Yes, you do. You will need a Schengen business visa (Type C), which is a short-term visa typically valid for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You must apply through the Hungarian consulate or visa centre in China. Required documents include:
  • An invitation letter from the Hungarian company
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Travel insurance
  • Flight reservations
  • And of course, a valid passport
🇰🇷 Citizens of South Korea
You are in a favourable position. Due to a bilateral agreement, South Korean citizens may enter Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days for business purposes. You only need to bring your passport and have a clear reason for your visit. No additional paperwork is required.
Who Oversees Your Visit?
The Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság (OIF), also known as the Hungarian Immigration Authority, is responsible for overseeing your stay. They:
  • Verify (check) your visa and residence permit
  • Ensure that you are not engaging in unauthorized employment while claiming to be a visitor
  • May conduct inspections if there are any concerns
Therefore, it is important to maintain accurate documentation and be transparent about the purpose of your visit.
